Sensory profile

The Sensory Profile’ is a questionnaire that identifies the way individuals receive and respond to sensory stimulation from their world.

Sensory profile for mental health and gambling problems

We are all sensory beings and the brain needs sensory input to operate. The world is full of sensory experiences for us to utilise whether it be touch, smell, sound, movement and taste.

All of us are unique and have unique sensory preferences, some needing less and some needing more sensations to feel good.  Because of these differences our environment can affect our thoughts and behaviour, including our impulses to gamble.

When referred to gambling minds, most people will be offered a Sensory Profile assessment and a feedback session. Recommendations around sensory modulation which may reduce urges to gamble, will be provided.

The sensory profile

The Sensory Profile’ is a questionnaire that clients usually complete.  It looks at the different ways people detect and process sensory information (smell, sight, taste, sound, touch and movement) and their behavioural responses to sensory experiences.

Sensory information helps people understand their own bodies, behaviour and the world around them. Sensations are a part of everything people do. Daily decisions about what to wear or eat, where to sit in a group or how to complete day to day tasks are related to the amount and type of sensory input that enable people to be at an optimal level of arousal to function.

Through ‘The Sensory Profile’ our service can help counsellors, clients and families understand how:

  • Certain activities and experiences affect your behaviour.
  • To include sensory experiences into your everyday routine to assist with concentration, attention and managing stress.
  • The environment might impact your mood and behaviours.
  • Clients and families can optimise their routine to encourage healthier decision and behaviours.

Our Occupational Therapist will assist clinicians, counsellors and clients to interpret the results and make suggestions which can assist with stress, mental health symptoms and problematic gambling behaviours.
