Single session family therapy is a solution focussed approach designed to get the most out of one session.
All members of the family are affected by gambling and all have strengths and resources to offer. The family inform the agenda for the session by identifying a few primary issues using a pre-session questionnaire.
The session allows a safe and supportive opportunity for meaningful and active inclusion for all family members who attend. The session typically includes the family participating in a therapeutic session with a counsellor, with a reflective team present. The team normally includes the Gambler’s Help counsellor and at least one gambling minds specialist. Having at least two clinicians in the session enables a reflective approach where different perspectives can be shared. The reflective team then have a conversation about what they notice and what thoughts they have on what may be helpful for the family.
Where possible, the therapeutic counsellor and clinicians have a pre and post session reflection. The family are contacted after the session for feedback and invited to a follow up session if they wish. A therapeutic letter is sent to the family and counsellor highlighting the key messages using the family’s language where possible.
Scot Miller Feedback Informed Treatment rating scales are used at the beginning and end of sessions to capture feedback regarding the consumer’s progress and therapeutic alliance.
